Situated in the East of Dumfries and Galloway, Annan
is a former harbour on the banks of the River Annan, popular with
fisherman. The area has historical interest, including Roman Camps
and the workplace of Thomas Carlyle. Each year, the town celebrates
the Riding of the Marches, in honour of the Royal Charter bestowed
by King James V. This involves parades, massed pipe bands, competitions
and riding the boundaries of the burgh.
